Red Efts are the juvenile stage of the eastern newt.

They are known for their bright orange or red coloration. They will spend up to 3 years on land, primarily in moist forests, before returning to aquatic environments as adults. They prefer sunny, slow-moving, and shallow bodies of water. Their coloration is a warning to predators of their toxicity.

While not currently endangered, habitat loss and water pollution can pose threats to red efts and their population.
